Thursday was a lovely day to be outdoors birding and the Trent River Estuary proved an excellent venue at this time of year.
Our group spent most time searching for birds in the thickets and trees since the tide was very low with shore- and seabirds being quite distant. We were quite excited to find a number of summer residents have returned with Red Crossbills being a highlight.
Our final species count was 24: American Robin, Northern Flicker, Bald Eagle, Eurasian Collared-Dove, American Crow, Brewer’s Blackbird, Red-winged Blackbird, Red Crossbill, Orange-crowned Warbler, Audubon’s Yellow-rumped Warbler, Violet-green Swallow, Barn Swallow, House Finch, White-crowned Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Anna’s Hummingbird, Mallard, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Black Oystercatcher, Yellowlegs, Killdeer and Common Merganser.
