We parked at Jumbo’s Cabin by the Coal Creek Historic Park today, to check out the bird life around the marsh ponds and along the trail system that connected them.
The day became quite warm and sunny as the morning progressed, so layering clothes proved a good idea. Bird song surrounded us – the problem was sighting the respective birds between all the leaves and branches. Still, by the end of our session, we had located 27 species...23 visually and 4 by sound:
Common Raven, Bald Eagle, Eurasian Collared-Dove, American Robin, European Starling, Northern Flicker, Red-winged Blackbird, Red-breasted Sapsucker, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Bushtit, Purple Finch, Yellow Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Flycatcher sp., American Goldfinch, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Bewick’s Wren, Anna’s Hummingbird, Violet-green Swallow, Tree Swallow and Mallard were all seen, while the Warbling Vireo, Swainson’s Thrush, Brown-headed Cowbird and Pileated Woodpecker were heard by various Birders.
After our outing, we adjourned to the Waverley Hotel in Cumberland for a lunch debrief.
